why is childhood immunization important?
Vaccines are an important part of preventive healthcare and help protect children from serious, preventable illnesses. Childhood immunizations have dramatically reduced many diseases that can cause significant illness, serious complications, and even death.
We follow the vaccine recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)and work with families to help keep children protected throughout childhood and adolescence.

how do childhood vaccines work?
Vaccines help prepare your child’s immune system to recognize and fight certain infections. They expose the immune system to a safe form or part of a germ—or provide instructions that teach the body how to recognize it—allowing your child to develop an immune response without having to experience the full illness.
If your child is later exposed to that infection, their immune system is better prepared to recognize it and respond quickly. Vaccines greatly reduce the risk of serious illness, complications, and hospitalization from many preventable diseases.

side effects of immunizations
It’s natural to wonder how your child may feel after receiving a vaccine. Most children do very well with immunizations. When side effects occur, they are usually mild, temporary, and improve on their own within a few days. For recommended childhood vaccines, the benefits of protection far outweigh the risk of serious side effects.
Some common reactions may include:
- Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
- A low-grade fever
- Feeling tired or a little more irritable than usual
- Mild muscle aches or fussiness
- With some vaccines, a mild temporary rash
These reactions can occur as your child’s immune system responds to the vaccine and builds protection. Not every child will have side effects, and reactions can vary depending on the vaccine.
Serious reactions, including severe allergic reactions, are extremely rare. Before you leave, we’ll let you know what you might expect after your child’s vaccines and answer any questions you have.

It’s completely understandable for parents—and children—to feel a little nervous about shots. Most childhood vaccines are given as a quick injection, usually in the arm or thigh. Some vaccines can also be given by mouth or as a nasal spray.
When a shot is needed, our goal is to make the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible. Holding or comforting your child, distraction, and other age-appropriate coping techniques can help reduce fear and make the experience easier.
We know every child responds differently to shots. We take the time to help children feel safe and supported, and we encourage parents to let us know about any concerns with needles or previous difficult experiences before vaccination.

Keeping your child up to date on vaccines is an important part of routine pediatric care. We review your child’s immunization record at well-child visits and help you understand which vaccines are recommended next.
Following the recommended childhood vaccine schedule helps protect children from serious, preventable illnesses at the ages when they may be most vulnerable. If your child has missed a vaccine or fallen behind, we can review their records and create an appropriate catch-up plan.
We also make it easy to keep track of your child’s immunization history. Vaccine records are maintained in your child’s medical chart and can be accessed through the patient portal when needed for school, daycare, sports, or other activities.
