what makes our practice different
Here We Grow Pediatrics was created with families in mind. Dr. Basaldua and Dr. Finklea envisioned a pediatric practice where children receive thoughtful, evidence-based care and parents feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and being part of the conversation.
We know that parenting brings new questions at every stage—from feeding and sleep in infancy to milestones, school, friendships, and the changes of adolescence. Our team is here to offer guidance, reassurance, and practical support as your child grows.
Our goal is to build lasting relationships with families while providing the preventive care, medical guidance, and support children need through every stage of childhood.
We’re here to care for your child today, support your family along the way, and get to know the person they’re becoming.

your baby’s first appointment
when should my newborn be seen?
Your baby’s first pediatric visit is an important opportunity to make sure they’re adjusting well after birth. Most newborns are seen two days after leaving the hospital, although the exact timing may depend on your baby’s feeding, weight, jaundice, age, and any other medical concerns.
Once your baby is ready to be discharged from the hospital, give our office a call. We’ll help determine when your newborn should be seen and schedule their first appointment.
what happens during the first visit?
Your baby’s first appointment gives us a chance to check their health, review how things have been going at home, and help you feel more confident during those early days.
During the visit, we may:
- Perform a complete newborn examination
- Check weight, growth, and hydration
- Discuss breastfeeding, pumped breast milk, or formula feeding
- Check for jaundice
- Review hospital records and newborn screening results
- Talk about safe sleep and vitamin D supplementation
- Review immunizations and upcoming well-child visits
This visit is also a time to talk about how you and your baby are doing at home. Whether you have questions about feeding, sleep, crying, diapers, or something that simply doesn’t feel quite right, we want you to feel comfortable discussing any concerns.
Those first days with a newborn come with a lot of questions, and we’re here to help you navigate them.

frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose a pediatrician before delivery?
It is strongly recommended. Choosing before delivery makes it easier to arrange follow-up care once your baby leaves the hospital.
Can I meet a pediatrician before my baby is born?
Yes. We offer complimentary prenatal visits for expectant parents. Call 210-465-1800 to schedule.
When should I schedule my baby’s first appointment?
Call once your baby is born and you know the anticipated discharge plan. We will book around the hospital’s recommendations and your baby’s needs.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Photo identification, insurance information when available, hospital discharge paperwork, feeding and diaper information, any medications or supplements, and a list of your questions.
Do you support breastfeeding?
Yes, while recognizing that every family’s feeding experience is different. We are happy to discuss breastfeeding, pumping, supplementation and formula without judgment.
What if my baby loses weight?
Some weight loss is common in the first days. We will monitor weight, hydration and feeding carefully and make a follow-up plan if one is needed.
What vaccines are given at birth?
Many newborns receive the first hepatitis B vaccine at the hospital. We will review the records and go through the recommended schedule with you.
Can both parents or caregivers attend?
Yes. Parents and caregivers are welcome whenever possible.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
Yes. We reserve appointments for sick and urgent concerns each day whenever possible.
